Three problems, one root cause each:
1. Sidebar jump: the server rendered its own default (current section
open, rest collapsed) and restoreDocsNav corrected it after paint —
open-then-close. Fix: persistence moved server-side. toggleCollapsible
now writes a docs_nav cookie (strictly-necessary UI state, no
identifiers, SameSite=Lax); ApplyNavOverrides merges it into the nav
before render, so first paint IS the visitor's state. The post-paint
restore is deleted.
2. Arrows out of sync / double-click: two visibility mechanisms
disagreed. There was NO data-collapsed CSS at all — collapsed sections
were only ever hidden by JS after paint, and the arrow rotation came
from a different (server) state. Now: style.css hides on
[data-collapsed=true] (single source of truth, server-rendered),
applyCollapsed sets only the attribute, arrows rotate from the same
merged value. Live check: 37/37 collapsibles arrow-consistent.
3. api-reference.md links: all 20+ quick links were directory-style
(authentication/ etc.) that 404 on the docs site, plus stale targets
(books/, ../collections-api.md, websocket 'coming soon'). Rewritten to
real per-file links — all 9 unique targets return 200 live. Same rot
fixed in admin/hash-conflicts.md, development.md, android-app.md,
create_media_item.md, koreader-protocol.md; docs/index.md redirected
from the deleted collections-api monolith (stale 530-line duplicate of
the gated api/collections docs — deleted, per the WO2 doctrine).
New gate: TestDocsRelativeLinks walks docs/developer/** and fails make
test on any relative link that is directory-style or unresolvable —
overview links can never silently rot again.
Docs pages no longer embed the app Header (whose hx-post login form silently
degraded to a native GET, leaking credentials into the URL — this page never
loaded htmx). New docs-owned topbar: search, theme picker, Open App; anonymous
visitors get a plain /login link. Optional-auth middleware (hand-rolled —
echojwt's ErrorHandler return ends the chain, producing empty 200s) populates
the user for signed-in visitors.
Navigation rebuilt from the docs directory tree: 6 sections, subcategory
groups, server-rendered expansion and active states. Search results are a
templ partial (/docs/search/partial); code highlighting is server-side chroma
(previously dead hljs CSS); prose is theme-aware via typography DEFAULT vars
(prose-invert painted unreadable text under light themes). /docs renders the
index directly; standalone 404 without the tailwind CDN.
Tests: navigation routing/expansion (internal/docs), render pins asserting no
login form/password field/app sidebar ever return on docs pages.
lint-rendering: exempt *.test.ts fixtures (jsdom DOM building); docs.ts
baseline 5 -> 1.
Update cmd/server/main.go and internal/docs/http_handler.go for Echo v5.
Changes in main.go:
- Update import from echo/v4 to echo/v5
- Replace echomiddleware.Logger() with RequestLogger()
- Remove net/http import (no longer needed)
- Update server startup to use app.StartServer()
- Replaces direct echo.Start() call
- Better separation of concerns
Changes in http_handler.go:
- Update handler signatures to use *echo.Context
- Ensure Echo v5 compatibility
These changes complete the server layer migration to Echo v5.
- Add CSS rules to web/static/input.css for header positioning
- Header is sticky only on /docs pages via .page-docs body class
- Add page-docs class to body element in templates/docs.templ
- Non-docs pages have static header position
BREAKING CHANGE: Documentation URLs have changed
New structure:
- user/ - End-user documentation (device setup, sync guides, frontend)
- developer/ - Developer documentation (API reference, protocols, specs)
- operations/ - Operations documentation (deployment, troubleshooting)
- contributing/ - Contribution guides
Changes:
- Created portal INDEX.md files for each audience section
- Moved device guides to user/devices/ (kobo-setup.md, koreader-setup.md)
- Moved API docs to developer/ (api-reference.md, collections-api.md)
- Moved sync guide to user/sync-guide.md
- Moved troubleshooting to operations/troubleshooting.md
- Moved all split API docs to developer/api/
- Renamed protocol files (kobo-protocol.md, koreader-protocol.md)
- Added placeholder user guides (frontend, user-areas, settings, admin)
- Updated all internal links to new paths
- Updated Go code (http_handler.go, navigation.go) for new paths
- Updated main INDEX.md for audience-based navigation
Benefits:
- Clear separation of user and developer documentation
- Scalable structure for future user guide expansion
- Better organization and discoverability
- Audience-specific landing pages
Related to DOCS_IMPLEMENTATION_PLAN.md Phase 2 completion
Phase 4 part 1: Add search infrastructure
- Add SearchDoc struct and GenerateSearchIndex to docs handler
- Add stripHTML helper for plain text extraction
- Add ServeSearchIndex endpoint to http handler
- Add /docs/search-index.json route in main.go
- Search index includes all documentation files with ID, title, content, URL
Phase 3 complete: Add API explorer to endpoint documentation
- Add DocsLayoutWithExplorer template function
- Update HTTPHandler.ShowAPIEndpoint to check authentication
- Add GetAPIEndpointData method to docs handler
- Include API explorer for all endpoint documentation
- Explorer shows mock data to non-authenticated users
- Explorer enables real API execution for logged-in users
- Add legacy fallback for endpoints without explorer data
- Add internal/docs package with markdown renderer (goldmark)
- Create docs layout template with sidebar navigation
- Implement hierarchical navigation auto-generated from docs folder
- Add table of contents generator (extract ## headings)
- Add syntax highlighting for code blocks (highlight.js)
- Add mobile responsive design
- Add /docs routes to main.go
The documentation system features:
- Dark theme matching app design
- Collapsible sidebar sections (Getting Started, User Guide, Device Setup, API Reference, Contributing)
- Table of contents for each page
- Breadcrumb navigation
- Full-text search (client-side JavaScript, API endpoint ready)
- Syntax highlighting for code blocks
- Mobile-friendly with hamburger menu
All documentation is served from /docs route, no authentication required.
Markdown files are rendered using goldmark with GFM extensions and syntax highlighting.
